D.J. Reader

Why be excited: Reader will provide more than a bit of signing-day drama. He’ll have a chance to step into Clemson’s defensive line rebuilding project on equal footing with fellow signees Carlos Watkins and Josh Brown. Dabo Swinney opened the door of opportunity even wider on Wednesday with his announcement of Tyler Shatley’s move from defensive tackle to offensive guard, and Reader – who was recruited by many as an offensive lineman – was targeted early by Clemson as a defensive line. He’s strong, smart and mobile, and will soon have a chance to show what he can do.

You may not know: Reader is a Division 1-level baseball prospect as a pitcher and a first baseman. He throws a 90-mile-per-hour fastball and had a 1.50 ERA last season, and batted better than .600.

How he fits into the depth chart: He should start out competing for a second-team spot next fall, along with Watkins and Brown. If others ahead of him develop quickly, then a season’s investment as a redshirt is a possibility.
