Why be excited: The Clemson coaching staff identified Tankersley early as the kind of player they want in their secondary much in the mold of current freshman Robert Smith, who has made the move from quarterback to safety. Tankersley was a triple-threat at Silver Bluff High on offense as a run-first quarterback capable of burning defenses with his arm, and on defense as a disruptive, make-things-happen safety.
You may not know: Silver Bluff coach Al Lown knows NFL-caliber talent, having coached former USC star and NFL wide receiver Troy Williamson. He sees much of the same in Tankersley. "He's probably the second-fastest kid I've ever coached next to Troy," Lown told the Augusta Chronicle. "The speed is the No. 1 thing."
How he fits into the depth chart: Depth in the secondary should give Clemson's coaches the option of redshirting Tankersley next season, giving him a head start on his transition to full-time defense.
