Cannon Smith

Why be excited: He's a big, physical tight end who'll fill an essential role in the Tigers' tight end mix as a point of attack blocker, in addition to having good hands and running ability. The Clemson coaching staff has had him in camp on more than one occasion, and he earned high marks both from the coaches and the players he competed against. He grew up as a Clemson fan, as the son of 1981 Tiger defensive end Bill Smith, who's now a member of the university's board of trustees.

You may not know: After Smith committed to Clemson last summer, Alabama made a run with a recruiting double-team by Billy Napier and Chris Rumph, both former Tiger coaches. He's rated as the nation's No. 22 offensive tackle prospect by 247Sports.

How he fits into the depth chart: He'll complement fellow signee Milan Richard in Clemson's multi-faceted stable of tight ends.
