Men's soccer to play 8-game ACC slate; tourney format altered for 2014

Tigers will play nine home matches, nine against 2013 NCAA tournament teams

The 2014 Clemson men’s soccer schedule was announced Monday. The Tigers open the season Friday, August 29, against Radford at Riggs Field, the first of nine home matches in 2014.

The match with Wake Forest on Friday, September 26, will be Clemson Soccer Alumni reunion night. The Tigers’ 1984 national championship team will be honored on their 30th anniversary.

A total of nine teams that participated in the 2013 NCAA tournament are on the schedule, including five non-conference matches. Between September 26 and October 28, seven of the eight Clemson opponents played in the NCAA tournament last season.

In its new expanded format, ACC teams will play an eight-game league schedule. Absent from Clemson's schedule next season will be Duke, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame.

The format for the ACC tournament has changed for this year, with matches spread out over an 11-day period. First-round matches will be played at home sites on Nov. 5, with quarterfinal matches at home sites on Nov. 9. The semifinals and finals will be played Nov. 14 and 16 at Cary, North Carolina.

Clemson returns eight starters from its 2013 team that advanced to the NCAA tournament and finished with an 11-7-3 record overall.

September: 2 - at South Carolina; 5 - San Diego State tournament vs. San Diego State; 7 - San Diego State tournament vs. Cal-Irvine; 12 at Boston College; 14 - at Providence; 17- Gardner-Webb; 20 - Syracuse; 26 - Wake Forest

October: 3 - at North Carolina; 7 - Charlotte; 11 - at Pittsburgh; 14 - Coastal Carolina; 17 - Virginia; 24 - at Louisville; 28 - South Florida; 31 - NC State

November: 5 - ACC tournament first round; 9 - ACC quarterfinals; 14 - ACC semifinals; 16 - ACC finals
