Fifth-ranked N.C. State sent junior ace Carlos Rodon to the mound for its weather-delayed season opener on Sunday, but gave him no support and lost to Canisius 3-0 in a shaky start for one of the ACC's preseason favorites.
The two-time All-American Rodon hit three batters and gave up back-to-back doubles in the first inning.
“My command overall today was up and down, in and out and real inconsistent,” Rodon told the Raleigh News & Observer.
“I put a lot of stock in one game,” said Wolfpack coach Elliott Avent. “That game counts, it was real and it was who we were today and it wasn’t very good...
“Maybe we’ve heard too much about how good we are and maybe we’re not that good."
In other ACC games on Sunday, Florida State completed an opening weekend sweep of Niagara with a 13-0 victory, Boston College completed a 3-1 weekend by beating Santa Clara 8-6, and Pittsburgh (2-0) won its second straight over Coastal Carolina, 10-6.
FSU and Pitt were the only teams to emerge unscathed from opening weekend, while Clemson, Miami and Duke won their series.
North Carolina (1-1) bounced back from its opening loss to College of Charleston and beat the Cougars 12-3 at Charleston, while top-ranked Virginia (2-1) defeated UNC-Wilmington 7-2. Georgia Tech (1-2) lost at home to VCU, 5-3; Notre Dame (1-2) fell to Florida Atlantic 13-3; Duke (2-1) dropped the finale in its series against SUNY-Binghamton, 7-6; Maryland (1-2) dropped an 8-5 decision to Florida; Miami (2-1) beat Maine 11-2; and Wake Forest (1-1) edged Georgetown 3-2.
