On Monday, Dabo Swinney 'cut loose' freshman cornerback Mackensie Alexander, in hopes that he'd to able to hit the field full-speed against South Carolina State.

But during Tuesday's practice, Alexander re-aggravated his groin injury, and Clemson announced that he will not play on Saturday against the Bulldogs.

Although Swinney offered no long-term prognosis on Alexander, it appears likely that the five-star recruit - the highest-rated member of Clemson's 2013 recruiting class - will be forced to redshirt this season.

Alexander first suffered the injury on the second day of practice, August 3, and has been sidelined since.

Out of high school, Alexander was rated as the nation's No. 4 player overall by ESPN.

I am a Clemson graduate and a fan. I have been going to Clemson football games since 1957. I have never been so disappointed in someone getting hurt and not being able to play since Buddy Gore hurt his knee way back in 1967. And he wasn't out but one game. That may have been in 1968. I was really looking forward to seeing this boy play. I think he is probably as good as his press clippings and he would have helped us become great. This really saddens me he is hurt again. Probably not a day at the beach for him, either. Hang in there. You will be needed when are well. Short of me dying, I will still get to watch you play sooner or later.
