Former Clemson star Jonathan Byrd will make his first start of the season on Thursday when he opens play at the PGA Tour's Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club at Humble, Texas.

Byrd has not played competitively since last September, when he was sidelined with pain and inflammation in his left wrist. He withdrew from the McGladrey Classic in October, and after consulting with specialists underwent surgery to repair a torn tendon, an injury he attributes to the wear and tear of playing golf.

Byrd, a fully exempt member of the tour since earning his PGA card as a rookie in 2002, is a five-time tour winner who is coming off a pair of solid and productive seasons.

In both 2011 and 2012, Byrd recorded seven top-25 and five top-10 finishes. He placed 49th on last year's PGA Tour money list with more than $1.6 million in earning.

Byrd, who didn't play golf for nearly four months while recovering, had hoped to make his debut at the Tampa Bay Championship three weeks ago, but decided he needed more time and delayed his return until this week's Houston Open.

He'll tee off at 8:30 Thursday morning from the No. 10 tee at Redstone, playing with Martin Laird and John Huh.

Also in the field will be former Tigers Kyle Stanley and Lucas Glover. Stanley will tee off at 8:10 a.m. with Aaron Baddeley and Arron Oberholser, while Glover will play at 1:10 p.m. with Tommy Gainey and Johnson Wagner.
