Plenty to watch: Clemson commitments, targets in spotlight at The Opening

A pair of 2014 Clemson football commitments, quarterback Deshaun Watson of Gainesville, Ga. and linebacker Chris Register of Greensboro, N.C., will be on hand when The Opening kicks off this weekend at Beaverton, Oregon.

The event features some of the top prospects in the 2014 and 2015 football recruiting classes, and also incorporates the Elite 11 quarterbacks competition.

Held at Nike's world headquarters, several sessions of The Opening will be televised by ESPNU, including the the SPARQ Rating National Championship on July 1 at 7 p.m. (ET), the Nike 7-on-7 Tournament pool

play on July 2 at 9 p.m., and the Elite Linemen Challenge finals and the 7-on-7 Tournament semifinals and final on July 3 at 9 p.m.

Watson is one of 18 quarterbacks who advanced through regional qualifying to the Elite 11 competition, which also features ACC-bound quarterbacks Andrew Ford of Camp Hill, Pa. (Virginia Tech) and Brad Kaaya of West Hills, Calif. (Miami).

Others selected include David Blough of Carrollton, Texas (Purdue), David Cornwell of Norman, Okla. (Alabama), DeShone Kizer of Toledo, Ohio (Notre Dame), Jacob Park of Goose Creek, S.C. (Georgia), Drew Baker of Hebron, Ky. (Kentucky), Jerrod Heard of Denton, Texas (Texas), K.J. Carta of San Jose, Calif. (Vanderbilt), Kyle Allen of Scottsdale, Ariz. (Texas A&M), Luke Rubenzer of Scottsdale, Ariz. (California), Manny Wilkins of Novata, Calif. (Arizona State), Morgan Mahalek of Kentfield, Calif. (Oregon), and Will Grier of Davidson, N.C. (Florida).

Also participating will be uncommitted Keller Chryst of Palo Alto, Calif., Sean White of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Stephen Collier of Leesburg, Ga.

The Elite 11 competition gets underway on June 29.

The Opening, which features both drills and team competition, will begin on Monday, July 1 and run through Wednesday, July 3.

The Opening could prove to be a recruiting 'event' for Clemson, in that Tiger wide receiver recruiting target Artavis Scott of East Lake High in Tarpon Springs, Fla. will announce his college decision during next week's camp.

Another top-level wide receiver is one of the main remaining recruiting needs for the Tiger coaching staff, which has already filled 12 of its available 15-16 slots. Scott is among a handful of receivers considering the Tigers, along with Trevion Thompson of Durham, N.C. and Trey Quinn of Lake Charles, La.

Scott made his most recent visit to Clemson for Dabo Swinney's camp. Michigan is thought to be the Tigers' main competition. He also has offers from Florida, Florida State, Ohio State and Central Florida, among others.

Scott played just half a season as a junior because of an ankle injury, but had 995 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. In East Lake's recent spring game, he returned two kicks for touchdowns.

Future Clemson opponents who'll appear in the competition include LB Bryson Allen-Williams (South Carolina), TE Jeb Blazevich (Georgia), RB Nick Chubb (Georgia), TE Kevin Crosby (South Carolina), OL Trevor Darling (Miami), LB Kain Daub (Florida State), DB Wesley Green (South Carolina), QB Jacob Park (Georgia), WR JoJo Robinson (Florida State), RB Joseph Yearby (Miami), QB Andrew Ford (Virginia Tech), and QB Brad Kaaya (Miami).

Recruiting Notes: Clemson is in the final group for a pair of 2014 targets - wide receiver Trey Quinn of Lake Charles, La., and defensive end George Brown of Cincinnati, Ohio...South Carolina has picked up commitments from two players with Clemson offers - defensive back Wesley Green of Lithonia, Ga. and defensive back Darin Smalls of Summerville, S.C...Clemson target Jalyn Holmes, a defensive end from Norfolk, Va. who attended Dabo Swinney's camp earlier this month, has picked Ohio State over Clemson and FSU...Clemson is a finalist for Georgia DT Kendall Baker, along with Georgia, Auburn, Florida State, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech...Middleton, Md. defensive end Rick Leonard will choose between Clemson and Florida State.
