Clemson junior Whitney Fountain compiled 3,942 points and finished runner-up in the pentathlon Friday at the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, KY. The point value was just shy of her personal best, a tally of 3,998 achieved in the Tigers’ opener last month.
Fountain finished second to NCAA leader Xenia Rahn of Memphis, who won the event with 4,191 points. Fountain began the day strong, as she matched a season-best 8.70 in the 60-meter hurdles to best the field of multi-event athletes. She followed with a high jump of 5’7.75” and shot put distance of 35’10”. After a long jump of 18’5.75”, she turned in a solid time of 2:24.67 in the final event, the 800 meters.
The No. 1 ranked women’s team will return its full squad to action next weekend at the New Balance Invitational in New York City.
