Swinney expects turnovers to again tell the story for 'different' Clemson team

'The experience was just fantastic. We had great practices and preparation. But then we got into the game and we turned the ball over'

Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd fumbles the ball as he is hit by West Virginia's Bruce Irvin in the second quarter of the 2012 Orange Bowl on January 4.

Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd fumbles the ball as he is hit by West Virginia's Bruce Irvin in the second quarter of the 2012 Orange Bowl on January 4.

Different time, different team, different situation.

Same challenge.

A substantial portion of Clemson's team will carry the experience of their 2011 beating at the hands of West Virginia with them as they begin preparations for their second Orange Bowl trip in three seasons.

"We're a diifferent team than when we went down there a couple years ago," Swinney said. "We had 42 freshmen on that roster, and it was their first BCS experience and all that kind of stuff.

"Now we've got a lot of guys that have been there. The biggest thing is, we'll have a great practice plan and great preparation, and we'll have to play a great ballgame to have a chance to compete with a team like Ohio State, that's for sure."

For the Tigers, playing well starts with ball security. Turnovers were the primarily culprit in the Tigers' season-ending loss to South Carolina, just as they were responsible for the avalanche that turned a back-and-forth game into a 70-33 Orange Bowl rout two years ago.

"The last time we went down there, we had a great trip - a great experience," Swinney said. "The Orange Bowl folks do a great job, and the experience was just fantastic. We had great practices and preparation. But then we got into the game and we turned the ball over."

Both teams will be trying for milestones in the Jan. 3 game at Sun Life Stadium.

Clemson has a chance for back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in its history, as well as an opportunity to both start and finish the season in the top 10.

Ohio State, which has won more BCS bowl games than any other school, will be playing in their first bowl game under Urban Meyer, and will be trying to give their coach his fourth 13-1 season since 2006. Meyer is 7-1 in bowl games, including a 4-0 record in BCS games.

...."for 'different' Clemson team".....
How, pray tell are we "different"??

are we no longer "Nervous Nellies" that curl up on the ground when our opponent gets us two scores down ???
or we fumble or get intercepted again ??
How ??

or is it our "new and improved this year" O-Line ??

I guess we are different because we have more seasoned players. Which means that they have been through our spirit-crushing loses more than the team that played in the OB last time. Only coaching and preparation will change that this time. The talent is there.

How many times does someone have to be gullible? How many times are you asked to believe? I'm sick of it. No more. As far as i'm concerned even if Ohio State lays down for the Tigers this game means nothing. I'm not forgetting and i'm not accepting what has happened. Anyone that wants to continue to believe then continue to eat what you are being fed. Doesn't taste good and never will. It's time to get on with future plans.

I was actually thinking about our beat-downs at the hands of FSU and USC...

.....This season.....

People , people ...get off that ledge. Maybe try decaffeinated.
We are in our second Orange Bowl in 3 yrs. Our team has won 10+ games for three straight years. Our coach has rejuvenated the university and has renewed our brand on a nationwide level. Recruits now view us as equal or on par with the big boys again.
Stop all the negating and divisive grumblings. I assume losing to the Coots and the next BCS Nchamps was hard on everyone...but make no mistake that we are among the best football teams in the nation under Dabo Swinney.
He will begin beating the teams like FSU and other elite teams , of that claim I have no doubt. He believes and so I believe. Clemson has grown exponentially since he took the reigns and growth continues. Our depth , our recruiting success and our coordinator status have all improved under Dabo.
Just enjoy this success and thrill at the prospects of our future. The ACC will afford us the opportunity to lose 2 a year and still make the new playoff system. Dabo and these Clemson Tigrrs are the real deal. Quit yer birchin' and enjoy the ride.

No negative thoughts or words here just plain fact. Lets see, 10+ seasons in the last 3 years. 5 of the 10 this year Wake Forest at 4-8, North Carolina State at 3-9, Virginia at 2-10 and lets not forget to throw in South Carolina State and the Citadel. Is anyone really proud of this? C'mon. College Football is a result base business and i don't consider these teams a result i consider them a "gimme" game. We are still so far behind the elite teams it makes me sick to know we are not gaining ground. Anyone who is proud of this 10 win season is just making excuses for medeocrity. If we get down by 2 scores panic sets in, the defense hasn't made significant progress and why it is believed we don't need a mammoth offensive line just escapes me. It's always best policy to keep things real so you can call it like you see it. Everyone needs to stop being duped and quit having the wool pulled over your eyes.

Clemson still has a good team, we just lost to 2 teams thats better than us....SC and Fla State, so whats all of the bickering about? Did we think we was the best team.....Well I hope not, we are above average for the ACC and just average when compared to other conferences. We got out played and out coached by teams that obviously played better...Lets stop whinning and get ready for another season of winning against the other GLORIFIED HIGH SCHOOL teams we play and Lose to the high powered offense and solid defense teams again

Spurrier Himself said SC was "blessed" in our last game . Twice he said it.

the better team did NOT win.
I thought we would win, but after the 1st quarter, I knew we would lose, and quit watching.

Yeah you're right. We could be stuck in a conference where we know we'll never win it, even when we're given a schedule that doesnt include the best teams in our conference. Those coots sure must be embarrassed about having some low rent Big 12 team come in and show them how to win their division in only their 2nd season---something that took them dirt peckers 20 years to do. Its also nice to know that even after a disappointing season like we had we get to go to a real bowl game and have the chance to beat a top-ten team (again) instead of going to the lowly Citrus Bowl and playing some team barely ranked. Yep, if the chickens keep going to the citrus bowl old Phil Fulmer is gonna call up the Old Ball Sack and let him know that you cant spell citrus without U-S-C either.

When did you or anyone else on this site believe anything that Spurrier said??? Hes feeding us the same BS that Dabo feeds us all year long....Call it what you want to but they shut Boyd down put fear in him and caused interception and thats all part of the game...Forcing turnovers.

Even with all that being said, Most of the fans that I talk to would much rather win the In state Rivalry game than to go to a Orange Bowl especially knowing that the only reason we are going is because of the Rules enforced by the BCS and the fact that our conference is so weak and not because we are RANKED higher than our Rivalry team.....To be honest the joke is on us. We cant keep putting down a team that continue to have bragging rights for beating us year after year.Looks like we are headed for another ORANGE CRUSH BOWL.....remember WEST VIRGINIA!!!

Just keep thinking and talking your smack about USC and Spurrier, and he(they) will just keep beating you. CU is an above average team in a below average conference.

I agree CU is an above average team in a below average conference but in the world of college football, unfortunately for us we have to play out of our below average conference and thats when we fall apart.... and the record shows that...Dont be mad at me .BLAME yourself for being DELUSONAL and believing the HYPE that Dabo feed you every year.

Yep, Spurrier could go on forever beating Clemson but never winning anything else meaningful and the lamecock fans will sit there all giddy about it. Clemson once had a guy that could do the same thing. His name was Tommy Bowden…We fired him.

I doubt seriously that you had anything to do with the firing of Tommy Bowden and CU havent did anything relevant since the firing of Tommy Bowden....should have kept him, he at least could beat SC when he was here.

Radtiger and 33 are closet-coots. They have nothing but naively negative things to say about our coach , our conference and our team as a whole. How hard is it to win 10+ games a year ? Incredibly hard regardless of the percieved level of competition. Dabo Swinney is crushing these lesser teams that the previous 2 coaches were fired for losing to...crushing them. Clemson has some nice top 10/20wins under Dabo. Dont make yourself think that we are not a top 10 type team right now , we are. All this hatemouthing and coot support is disgusting.
Give it a break Dirtpecker clones.

You can call USC dirtpeckers and coots, which I don't get(understand), with a coot being a duck.Guess that's part of being a Clemmer. However, the fact remains, Spurrier owns Clemmons and Dumbo. 31-17, 27-17, 34-13, 29-7, and 34-17...'nuff said. Do you follow that.....Tater?
