Camp is done and the reviews are in: Clemson’s receiver group is looking really, really good.
“When you look at Sammy (Watkins) in practice, you’re like ‘wow, can’t believe what he’s doing,’” senior tailback Rod McDowell said Tuesday night. “Sometimes you have to catch yourself and say hey you can't be so shocked at your teammate. Sammy has had a wonderful camp.
Watkins more explosive, determined
“Sammy, Charone Peake, Martavis (Bryant) – those three grown receivers really had an awesome camp.”
Beyond that core group of juniors, Tigers offensive coordinator Chad Morris says is depth.
“What I like about what we have right now, our receiving corps from sideline to sideline – even two-deep in it – we feel very confident in those guys,” Morris said. “We’ve got great speed. Playing physical is the biggest press for those guys right now. Playing just as hard without the ball as you are with the ball.”
Coming off the peaks and valleys of last season, Morris sees his preseason All-ACC receiver rising above to a new level.
“I don’t he ever got into a rhythm (last season). There was nothing he could really do to get into that rhythm,” Morris said. “…I think the way he really took care of his body he really got himself into tip-top shape. I think if you asked him he’d tell you he’s in as good a shape as he’s ever been in his life.”
And that’s paying off on the field right now.
“There’s really no comparison in Sammy right now last year to this year,” said Morris. “He’s a lot more explosive and a lot more lean. Very determined and very focused. He’s probably had as good a camp as any we’ve had.”
