Georgia held a closed scrimmage under the lights at Sanford Stadium on Wednesday, and Thursday Mark Richt and his staff will spend a good deal of time mulling over the stats. By the time they’re finished, they hope to have a better idea of how the 2013 depth chart will shake out leading up to the season opener at Clemson.
Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham are scheduled to meet with media members later this afternoon and discuss which positions are close to being locked down and which ones remain unsettled.
Wednesday’s scrimmage was originally set to be an afternoon affair but Richt opted to move it to night since the Bulldogs’ opener against the Tigers at Memorial Stadium is set for just after 8 p.m. on Aug. 31.
“I’m glad we went at night,” Richt said. “It was good to see them play under the lights. The first game is at night, so I’m glad we did it. There was a lot more energy than the last scrimmage, and there should’ve been. The guys were really fresh and it showed on both sides of the ball. ... It was a night-and-day difference from the first one as far as the energy level.”
One player who continues to show plenty of energy is tailback Keith Marshall, who is listed just behind Todd Gurley on the depth chart but will get plenty of totes in 2013. He said this year’s camp has been highly competitive but he has also been more comfortable in his role.
“I think the biggest difference is that last year there was a lot of uncertainty going into camp and this year I’ve got a lot more maturity,” he said earlier in the week. “But the competition pushes you to be the best you can be and there’s been a lot of competition this camp.”
Marshall had six carries for 39 yards in the scrimmage while Gurley churned out two TDs and 33 yards on five runs.
Freshman Brendan Douglas led the ground game with 50 yards on seven carries.
Quarterback Aaron Murray, who has a starting spot wrapped up, also has several experienced receivers to throw to in 2013. However, he says freshman wideout Reggie Davis is making a case to crack the lineup and get some significant playing time.
“I tell you, Reggie might play a lot,” Murray said following a recent workout. “He’s a speed demon and might be out there in the receiving corps. He’s opened a lot of eyes.”
Murray, who was intercepted three times in Georgia’s first scrimmage of camp, fared much better on Wednesday, hitting 11 of 14 passes for 173 yards, one score and one pick.
Freshman corner Brendan Langley, who will likely be called upon to make a contribution in Georgia’s razor-thin secondary, helped his cause on Wednesday when he returned an interception for a touchdown.
Strong safety Josh Harvey-Clemons, who will miss the Clemson game due to suspension, led the defensive effort on Wednesday with seven tackles while inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera had five.
T.J. Stripling, freshman Leonard Floyd, Connor Norman and Garrison Smith had four tackles each.
Today the Bulldogs will work on special teams and practice in shells, while on Friday a full team practice in full pads is on the agenda.
