CLEMSON — As usual, Clemson’s road through the ACC baseball season will be challenging, if preseason polls are any indication.
When Baseball America’s preseason top 25 poll was released Tuesday, the Tigers were among five ACC schools in the top 25. Clemson will begin the season at No.16. It marks the 24th consecutive season the Tigers have received a preseason top-25 ranking from one of the three major polls. Collegiate Baseball ranked Clemson No.25 in its preseason poll, released last month.
Other ACC schools in the top 25 include No.9 North Carolina, No.12 Georgia Tech, No.18 Miami and No.20 Florida State.
Two-time defending national champion and archrival South Carolina is No.3, one of seven SEC schools ranked in the top 25, a poll high. With No.1 Florida, No.4 Arkansas, No.8 LSU and No.10 Vanderbilt, the SEC has five of the top 10.
Clemson finished 43-20 last season, dropping a 14-3 decision to UConn which eliminated the Tigers from the NCAA Tournament on their own field. Veteran coach Jack Leggett returns 20 lettermen, led by All-ACC players Phil Pohl and Richie Shaffer.
Clemson begins practice for the 2012 season Friday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, and opens the regular season Feb. 17 against UAB.
