WSPA-TV's Pete Yanity is reporting that "a source close to Tennessee head football coach Derek Dooley says that Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele recently turned down an offer to take the same position at his alma mater."

Steele, who just finished his third season as Clemson's defensive coordinator, was also a target for the Tennessee job two years ago, but turned down an offer to remain on Dabo Swinney's staff.

Steele's defenses were ranked among the top 25 nationally in most statistical categories in his first two seasons, but slipped significantly in 2011 and closed the year by allowing 70 points to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl.

Steele told The Post and Courier of Charleston, SC Tuesday afternoon that his status as defensive coordinator at Clemson remains unchanged.

Last night was tow defenses that haven't really played any offenses.
Alabama only played 3 teams with a winning record, did NOT win their division, let alone their conference.
Steele does need to find a consistent pass rush and some solution for mobile QBs.

I guess LSU's defense holding Oregon to 27 in Week 1 and WVU to 21 in Week 4 (in Morgantown) doesn't count.
