Cuts are coming: 704, exactly, between now and the NFL's mandated Friday, 9 p.m. deadline.

When the smoke clears, each of the 32 NFL teams will be down to a 53-man active roster. Players who've worked their way through the preseason to this point, surviving Monday's cut to 75, will be scrambling for places on practice and reserve squads.

Most of 32 former Clemson players on NFL rosters when camp began on August 1 survived the first series of cuts.

One player who enhanced his chances in the big way during his last preseason game is Jamie Cumbie, who is trying to make the Oakland Raiders' squad as a defensive lineman.

In the Raiders' 32-20 victory over Detroit, the 6-foot-7 Cumbie had two tackles - a sack and a tackle for loss - and batted down three passes at the line of scrimmage.

Also with an impressive performance was cornerback Coty Sensabaugh, who had five tackles and a PBU for the Tennessee Titans in their 32-27 win over Arizona. Jamie Harper had four carries for 22 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown, for the Titans in that game, while both Nick Eason and Crezdon Butler played for the Cardinals. Eason had one tackle.

Chris Clemons started for Miami and had one tackle in the Dolphins' 23-6 loss to Atlanta.

Brandon Thompson had two stops in the Bengals' 27-13 loss to Green Bay. Phillip Merling had one tackle for the Packers.

Andre Branch started at right defensive end and had his second sack of the preseason in Jacksonville's 48-17 loss to Baltimore. Antoine McClain played for the Ravens in the game.

Byron Maxwell had a tackle and a PBU in Seattle's 44-14 win over Kansas City. Leroy Hill had a tackle for loss for the Seahawks.

Charlie Whitehurst started at quarterback and completed eight of 18 passes for 82 yards in San Diego's 12-10 win over Minnesota.

Justin Miller had five tackles and a PBU for the Lions in their loss to Oakland. He has three kickoff returns for a 25.0 average during the preseason.

Both Dwayne Allen and Kavell Conner started for the Indianapolis Colts in their 30-17 loss to Washington. Allen started at fullback and had one carry for three yards, while Conner made three stops from his linebacker position. Jarvis Jenkins played for the Redskins.

Barry Richardson is starting at right tackle for the St. Louis Rams.

Ricky Sapp missed his second straight preseason game with the New York Jets because of a sprained ankle, while Jacoby Ford sat out the Raiders' game with a sprained foot.
