Former Clemson golfer Sam Saunders

Sam Saunders, Ben Martin and Matt Hendrix are near the top of the leaderboard, in contending position, at the mid-way point of their PGA Tour Q School second-stage tournaments.

Saunders moved up four spots, from sixth to second, at Southern Hills in Brooksville, FL, on Wednesday, while Martin climbed one spot into a tie for third place.

Saunders, who won his first-stage tournament at St. Augustine, FL last month, shot a 67 in the second round and is at nine-under, four shots behind leader James Petitt. Martin is a shot back at eight-under after a second-round 69.

At Redstone Golf Club at Humble, TX, Hendrix shot a second-round 70 and remained in eighth place at six-under.

Stephen Poole opened play on Wednesday at Plantation Preserve at Plantation, FL and had an opening 69. He stands in 37th place, five shots out of the lead. Five players shot 64 in the opening round.

Also at Southern Hills, Danny Ellis is in 41st position at even-par after a second-round 73. Brian Duncan is 51st at two-over, and Kevin Johnson is 62nd at four-over. Phillip Mollica shot an 80 on Wednesday and is in 74th place.
