New offense and injuries were the storylines of Boston College's spring...
Reviewing Key Spring Issues: 1) New offense – With a modified scoring system for the spring game, you can’t exactly judge the offensive performance by points, but they had one TD on a QB bootleg and added a Nate Freese FG as well for the game's only true scoring. True sophomore Chase Rettig looked comfortable and completed 20 of 29 pass attempts for 182 yards. With the top two running backs on the depth chart out, the passing game was on display and looked solid even with a couple of wide receivers out.
2) Replacing offensive line stalwarts – Hard to judge from a spring game, but they gave up a few sacks and paved the way for leading rusher Mike Javorski to gain 82 yards on 20 carries.
3) Finally having a QB in place – Hard to win or lose a job in spring football, but Chase Rettig only solidified his spot as the BC starter after a strong spring game.
Spring MVP: QB Chase Rettig (Sophomore, 6-3 205, 1,238 career passing yards, 6 TDs/9 INTs/51.3 CMP%)
Breakout Offensive Player: TE Lars Anderson (Senior, 6-3 243, 257 career receiving yards, 2 TDs)
Breakout Defensive Player: LB Kevin Pierre-Louis (Sophomore, 6-1 221, 93 career tackles)
Key Injuries: WR Colin Larmond Jr was held out of the spring game – still rehabbing a knee injury that occurred before the 2010 season. Coming back from a knee injury as well, RB Montel Harris had one carry in the spiring game before taking himself out.
Spring Game Notes: 1) Rettig is clear No. 1 at QB – The stats show it, and if you watched the game like me, you know – there’s no competition for Chase Rettig’s spot at QB1. Rettig was 20/29 for 182 yards and had a long TD strike called back on holding at one point in the game. Barring injury, he’s the guy Tiger fans will see come October 8th in Death Valley.
2) Top RBs see limited action – Backup RB Andre Williams was out, and all-everything RB Montel Harris carried it once before taking himself out of the game. Harris is still in the rehab process from a knee injury sustained against Clemson last year.
3) Linebacker stands out – Sophomore Kevin Pierre-Louis had 11 tackles in the game (6 more than any other Eagles defender).
Quotable: Frank Spaziani on new BC offense - “I don't think the offense will be that much different. The terminology is what it is and that always changes a little bit. But there aren’t many new plays in football. We're not going to the spread or we're not going to the wishbone .Though I've been tinkering with Ed and the Canadian philosophy of putting a 12th man out there, other than that, we'll be alright.”
