A 6-1 loss to the nation’s unbeaten, top-ranked men’s tennis team proved to be a generally positive measuring stick for coach Chuck McCuen’s freshman-heavy Tigers on Friday.
Clemson, 15-10 overall and 2-8 in the ACC, got an upset win in singles by senior Kevin Galloway over 25th-ranked Sanam Singh (6-3, 4-6, 12-10) and played Virginia’s No. 1 Cavaliers in a series of competitive matches at Charlottesville.
With the victory, Virginia improved to 25-0 overall and 10-0 in the ACC.
“I am very proud of the way Kevin focused today and got the win over a ranked opponent,” said McCuen. “The match was tight and he really played solid throughout.
“I’m also excited about how we competed as a team. We battled on every court in doubles and singles, and gained momentum for Sunday’s match at Virginia Tech. We hope that the Tigers fans in the Blacksburg, VA area will come out and support us.”
Clemson will conclude its regular season in the 1 p.m. match at Blacksburg.
