Men's and women's cross country teams win Gamecock Invitational

Clemson’s cross country program got its season off to a strong start when the men's and women's teams swept the Gamecock Invitational, which was run at the Fort Jackson cross country course.

Led by individual champion Ty McCormack, the Clemson men totaled 19 points and were runaway winners over Coastal Carolina, which finished with 45 points.

The women's team prevailed in a tight three-way battle against Coastal and South Carolina. The Tigers finished with 38 points to edge the Chanticleers, who had 41 points. USC was third with 43.

McCormack, a freshman from Gainesville, GA, and a former USA Junior Olympic champion, finished with a time of 15:08.13 – a 12-second margin over his closest competitor.

McCormack was supported by fellow freshman Nate Hendershot, who placed fifth with a time of 15:54.14. He was closely followed by seniors Chad Holt (16:06.64) and Chris Slate (16:06.79), who finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Blake Kennedy (16:20.66) completed Clemson's scoring with a 10th-place finish.

In the women's race, a partial Clemson squad was led by redshirt freshman Elyse Borisko, who placed second with a time of 18:06.42. Sophomore Sarah Turman finished fourth in 18:12.04, and was followed by first-year freshmen Natalie Anthony (8th, 18:20.50), Alyssa Henshaw (13th, 19:01.55) and Alexa Neiling (16th, 19:10.48).

The Tigers' next competition will come in the Clemson Invitational on Friday, Sept. 17, at the new Musser Farms cross country course.
