Trevor Booker couldn’t wait to sign his first professional contract.
Sitting in a hotel room with manager Oliver Hill earlier this week, Booker got the news from agent Andy Miller that his contract with the Washington Wizards was ready to sign.
“We got the call that the deal was done, and basically, he ran out of the room, ran to the arena (Verizon Center),” Hill said on Thursday. “He didn’t wait on a car. He just ran down there.”
It was a six-block run from the hotel to the arena, Hill said, but one that was well worth it. Booker signed what could be a four-year deal with the Wizards.
Booker will be paid $1.24 million this season and $1.29 million in 2011-12. The deal has team options for the next two years at $1.39 million and $2.35 million, respectively.
On June 24, Booker became Clemson’s first NBA first-round pick since Sharone Wright went sixth overall to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1994, going 23rd overall to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who promptly traded his rights to Washington. He is Clemson’s first NBA draft pick since Will Solomon was a second-round pick in 2001.
He is currently competing with the Wizards’ summer league team in the Las Vegas Summer League.
Through two games, he has made all eight shots he has attempted from the field, averaging 8.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He also averages two steals and 1.5 blocks per game, which rank among the league’s top 20 averages.
In the Wizards’ second game, Booker, who is playing power forward, gave Wizards fans a taste of his athleticism, making a steal and going coast-to-coast for an alley-oop dunk from No.1 overall pick John Wall.
“He’s doing his part,” Hill said. “He’s accepting a different role. He’d been an on-the-ball guy and scorer for Clemson, but now he’s among a bunch of other stars like John Wall, getting rebounds and defending.”
The Wizards conclude Summer League play on Saturday.
